Dr Helen Snell
Dr Helen Snell is a Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Leader of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Service at MidCentral Health, Palmerston North. Helen’s PhD focused on factors influencing health activation and self-care, including diabetes distress and perceived communication and decision-making styles.
Helen is also Academic Supervisor for the Massey University Nurse Practitioner Training Programme since its inception in 2016 and is an assessor on Nursing Council NZ panels for registered nurses seeking registration as nurse practitioners.
Helen has led or been involved in many local and national initiatives over the years shaping and influencing nursing practice. Helen has served on the Executive Committee of the New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD) since 2010 and led the implementation of the registered nurse prescribing in diabetes health for the NZSSD in 2011 and 2012, providing the platform for RN prescribing more broadly in New Zealand. In 2011, Helen was Clinical Lead for the Health Workforce NZ Diabetes Workforce Plan for 2020. She is the primary author of the National Diabetes Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework and this informs the content of Healthmentoronline diabetes e-learning resource which she led the development of for the NZSSD. In 2014, Helen developed the Ministry of Health Tool kit to support the implementation of the Quality Standards for Diabetes Care.
